Paediatric Nurse

Job Summary:

The post-holder carries responsibility for the assessment of Paediatric patient care needs and for developing, implementing and evaluating programmes of care. The post-holder will provide skilled Paediatric care to patients, both pre and post-surgery, from 2 years of age and upwards. The post holder will be required to work with the wider multidisciplinary team to ensure provision of the best quality of service and to may be required to work within different clinical areas of the hospital as demand dictates or as clinical services develop further.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • To provide clinical care ensuring the delivery of the highest standard of individualised, family centred care to children and their families in conjunction with the wider multidisciplinary team.
  • Ensure that a child and family-centred approach to care is provided in inpatient areas, which takes account of children’s individual medical, psychological, emotional, and social needs.
  • Responsible for the safe co-ordination of admissions within the unit for children and young people booked for surgeries, investigations, tests, or ongoing treatment, ensuring best use of available resources and in line with hospital policy and procedures.
  • Communicate with a range of children, families, and staff, adjusting the language and style of delivery as appropriate.
  • To ensure that care is delivered as per hospital policies.
  • To participate in the ‘Induction Programme’ of nursing and other non-clinical staff as applicable after appropriate training.
  • To ensure that custody, administration and recording of medication are in accordance with hospital and NMBI guidelines.
  • To adhere to the guidelines within the NMBI Code of Professional Conduct.
  • To deliver nursing duties which meet the demands of the hospital and on occasion other nursing demands within the company.
  • Must be willing to take charge in the absence of the Ward Manager or Deputy Ward Manager.
  • Conduct pre-admission telephone assessments.

 

Nursing Organisation:

  • To support other team members in their professional work.
  • To be aware of current issues and policies within the hospital.
  • To assist the Ward Manager with cost-effective use of resources in patient care delivery.
  • Demonstrate an understanding and knowledge of the principles of safeguarding children.

 

Standard of Care:

  • To participate in the development of practice guidelines within the hospital.
  • To participate in research activities within the clinical setting.
  • To promote and implement evidenced based practices within the hospital as appropriate and relevant.
  • To be aware of the patient as an individual and adopt a holistic approach in the delivery of care.
  • To risk assess all patients and carry out manual handling as per hospital policy.

 

Communication:

  • To communicate effectively within the multidisciplinary team throughout the hospital.
  • To co-ordinate patient care and liaise effectively with other disciplines involved.
  • To maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
  • To liaise and communicate effectively with patients and relatives regarding their care and treatment.
  • To adhere to the NMBI guidelines for ‘Records and Record Keeping’.

 

Health & Safety:

  • To be aware of the hospital policies and practice in accordance with regulations.
  • To attend annual statutory training in fire, manual handling, infection control and Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation.
  • To report to the Ward Manager any reportable incident and accidents involving either staff, patients or visitors.
  • To report any defective or faulty equipment to the Ward Manager or Nurse in charge as appropriate.
  • To ensure proper care and usage of equipment in the ward.

 

Education:

  • To assist with and participate in the in-service training programme (including staff orientation induction programme) to enhance patient care.
  • To maintain and update own professional development.
  • To report on study days/courses attended to other members of the ward.
  • To rotate onto various shifts (as required) for professional update, to ensure statutory and personal development is achieved in line with the Personal Development Plan agreed during the annual appraisal.

 

Management:

  • To attend and contribute regularly to ward management meetings.
  • To participate in objective setting and annual Individual Performance Review.
  • To take on projects/assignments designated by the Ward Manager.

Theatre Nurse / ODP

Job Summary:

The post-holder will provide high quality direct patient care within the Hospital’s Theatre and Recovery Ward in the following areas: Orthopaedics, Gynaecology, Plastic Surgery, Urology, ENT, Ophthalmology, General Surgery, Spinal Surgery, Bariatric Surgery and Endoscopy. The successful candidate must have at least 2 years’ experience in a Theatre setting.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • To provide skilled nursing care and to demonstrate a high standard of nursing practice in the assessment, implementation and evaluation of patient care.
  • To ensure that care is delivered as per hospital policies.
  • To participate in the ‘Induction Programme’ of nursing and other non-clinical staff, as applicable, after appropriate training.

  • Assisting in the compilation of the Theatre register.

  • To respond to, record and report any adverse events or incidents relating to the intervention or treatment with an appropriate degree of urgency.
  • To accurately test equipment and identify any deviations from required performance standards, together with their likely causes.
  • To correctly and safely install and integrate equipment components.
  • To identify and assess the potential risks involved in work activities and processes for self and others.
  • To report to the Theatre Manager any reportable incident or accidents involving staff, patients or visitors.
  • To attend annual statutory training in Fire, Manual Handling, Infection Control and Cardio-pulmonary Resuscitation.
  • To report any defective or faulty equipment to the Theatre Manager, as appropriate.
  • To ensure proper care and usage of equipment in the Theatre/Recovery area.

 

Education:

  • To assist with and participate in the in-service training programme (including staff orientation induction programme) to enhance patient care.
  • To maintain and update own professional development.
  • To supervise qualified and unqualified staff.
  • To attend annual pre-registration assessment update sessions.
  • To report on study days/courses attended to other members of theatre staff.
  • To rotate onto various shifts, as required, for professional update, to ensure statutory and personal development is achieved in line with the Personal Development Plan agreed during the annual appraisal.
  • To share updated skills with night duty staff (if applicable) to further improve 24-hour continuity of patient care.

 

Management:

  • With appropriate training and support, to take charge of a shift without direct supervision.
  • To participate in integrated governance and risk assessment and reporting, as required.
  • To participate in the on-call rota for the department.

Job Summary:

The post-holder will be responsible and accountable for the assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of nursing care for post-operative patients.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Knowledge of various surgical specialities with associated anaesthesia technique, recovery management of, and an understanding of, potential post-operative complications.
  • Care and maintenance of clear airway.
  • Understanding of, and competence in, the recognition of the requirement for pain relief and monitoring of the effects of this.
  • Regular update training in, and maintenance of, resuscitation skills.
  • Knowledge of clinical observation requirements and the interpretation and reporting of same.
  • Specialist post-operative requirements.
  • Provide the prescribed nursing care without supervision.
  • Contribute to the development and evaluation of nursing practice in the unit.

 

Scope of Responsibilities

As a member of the clinical team, the Nurse / ODP will:

Participate in and contribute to:

  • The assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care.
  • Care of the patient in the immediate post-operative phase, to include care of the unconscious patient.
  • Provide extended recovery care for specialised surgical procedures.
  • Effective team working; maintaining staff relationships and morale amongst staff.
  • Maintaining a quality service, and participating in department specific quality performance measures.
  • Relevant clinical skills and functions commensurate with the role requirements following appropriate training and assessment.
  • Carrying out evidence-based practice and agreed care pathways.

 

Demonstrate an awareness of, and adherence to, strategies for:

  • Communication between patients, staff and relatives, reporting issues to the line manager as required.
  • Communication between members of the multi-disciplinary team.
  • Best practice in safe handling, administration, storage and custody of medicinal products.
  • Education of patients / relatives / carers regarding aspects of care and give appropriate health promotion and education.
  • Ensuring all documentation is legible, accurate, is written in black ink, and clearly signed / timed / dated in accordance with An Bord Altranais Guidelines.

 

Managerial Responsibilities

The post holder will:

  • Act as a mentor / preceptor as required.
  • Take charge when necessary as part of continuing professional and managerial development.
  • Maintain staff relationships and morale amongst staff.
  • Delegate appropriately to staff.
  • Review staff performance in line with performance appraisal guidelines.
  • Ensure personal and professional development in accordance with An Bord Altranais Guidelines.
  • Participate in Personal Performance Appraisal & Development Review.
  • Participate in staff induction, training, and other learning as required.
  • Participate in practice development initiatives.
  • Report any signs of ill health in colleagues.

 

General Responsibilities:
