Job Title: Staff Nurse

Job Summary:

The purpose of this role is to provide the highest level of care for patients from admission though to discharge. Theatre Nurses have responsibility for the assessment of care needs, planning, delivering and evaluating a high standard of care for all patients within their care. Theatre Nurses will contribute to the safe and efficient running of the Theatre department.

 

Scope of Responsibilities

Clinical and Patient Care:

The post holder will work in accordance with:

  1. The philosophy of the organisation.
  2. The Code of Professional Conduct and Kingsbridge Private Hospital Sligo guidelines, local policies, and procedures.
  3. Provide a high standard of nursing care and treatment to patients within the Theatre department, as per surgeons/anaesthetic lists instructions and in conformance with recognised nursing techniques and procedures and established policy.
  4. Be an effective member of the multidisciplinary team.
  5. Assess, plan and/or implement and evaluate individual holistic nursing care and support to patients.
  6. Communicate effectively with patients with the aim of ensuring patient understanding, comfort and well-being.
  7. Communicate effectively with medical, nursing, clerical and other health care workers to promote the health, welfare, and care of patients.
  8. Ensure provision of comfortable suitable and welcoming environment for patients.
  9. Demonstrate practice based on current advances in nursing practice and evidence-based research.
  10. Carry out duties as deemed appropriate by the manager or Nurse in charge.
  11. Contribute to supporting the manager or Nurse in charge in their duties.
  12. Rotates on all shifts of duty as required.
  13. Report to Theatre nurse in charge all issues arising on previous shifts, calls or weekends.
  14. Participate in the care, custody and administration of medicine in accordance with hospital policy.
  15. Ensure the drugs records are accurately kept and any discrepancy reported immediately to the manager on duty.

Management Function

  1. Develop and promote good working relationships within the wider team.
  2. Promote patient, staff and relative’s safety at all times and is familiar with current Health and Safety policies, Cardiac Arrest and Fire Drill procedure, reporting any concerns to the Nurse in charge or Theatre Manager.
  3. To take charge of the area during the absences of senior staff.
  4. To participate in discussions relating to care and its delivery and evaluation with other members of the multidisciplinary team.
  5. Provide clinical support to peers.
  6. Plans for the conservation and economical use of Hospital supplies.
  7. Act and take responsibility as delegated for stock item levels in specific specialities and co-ordinates with relevant staff to ensure appropriate viability of supplies.
  8. Checks all equipment before and after use and return equipment to its proper place.
  9. Reports faults or broken equipment and repair needs to the Nurse in charge.
  10. Ensure that all operating department records are maintained and checks written.

Professional and Educational Developmental Function

The post holder will:

  1. Be responsible for identifying own learning needs and keep up to date with professional development and research in conjunction with the Nurse in Charge
  2. Be aware of his/her role as a professional nurse and undertake practice within this framework.
  3. Be aware of legislation governing and affecting nursing protection, including Nurses Act Scope of Practice, etc.
  4. Review and set own objectives with the Nurse in charge and review own performance within the Appraisal Process.
  5. Participate in creating an environment conducive to learning.
  6. Participate in and promote teaching with the Theatre department.
  7. Take every opportunity to maintain and improve professional knowledge and competence.
  8. Undertake all identified training in service programmes and assessments including mandatory updates as identified necessary.
  9. Have active involvement in Quality Improvement Initiatives.

 

Essential Criteria:

  1. Applicants must be registered as a General Nurse with An Bord Altranais.
  2. Applicants must have recent experience within a Theatre setting.

Ophthalmology Nurse(s)

Kingsbridge Private Hospital Sligo are looking to recruit an additional Theatre Nurse with experience in Ophthalmology Surgery following an increase in demand.

Responsible to: Theatre Nurse Manager
Salary: Dependent on experience, can be discussed at interview

 

Job Summary:

The post-holder will provide high quality direct patient care within the hospital’s Theatre and Recovery Ward in the following areas: Orthopaedics, Gynaecology, Plastic Surgery, Urology, ENT, Ophthalmology, General Surgery, Spinal Surgery, Bariatric Surgery and Endoscopy. The successful candidate must have at least 2 years’ experience in Ophthalmology.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  1. To provide skilled nursing care and to demonstrate a high standard of nursing practice in the assessment, implementation and evaluation of patient care.
  2. To ensure that care is delivered as per hospital policies.
  3. To participate in the ‘Induction Programme’ of nursing and other non-clinical staff, as applicable, after appropriate training.
  4. To ensure that custody, administration and recording of medication are in accordance with hospital, and NMBI guidelines.
  5. To inform the Theatre Manager of any matters affecting the professional standard of patient care.

Nursing Organisation:

  1. To supervise the professional work of non-medical staff.
  2. To support other team members in their professional work.
  3. To be aware of current issues and policies within the hospital.
  4. To assist the Theatre Manager with the cost-effective use of resources in patient care delivery.

Standard of Care:

  1. To deliver high quality patient care that is clinically effective, evidence-based and appropriate.
  2. To assess, plan, implement and evaluate care as part of a collaborative programme of patient care.
  3. To ensure that correct aseptic techniques are used at all times.
  4. Working alongside the multi-disciplinary team, to ensure the safety of patients at all times.
  5. To administer medicines in accordance with NMBI guidelines and hospital policies and procedures.
  6. To keep accurate and complete records consistent with regulations, policies and procedures.
  7. To demonstrate and organised, effective and timely approach to all tasks.
  8. To recognise when colleagues need assistance and offer practical support.

  2. To ensure pre-operative checks are carried out o patient admission to the hospital and prior to commencement of any anesthetic or surgical procedure.
  3. To prepare the patient psychologically and physically for any planned procedure.
  4. To ensure that hospital policies and procedures are adhered to in relation to the checking of swabs, instruments, needles etc. and to report any discrepancy to the Anesthetist/Surgeon/Theatre Manager or senior member of theatre staff on duty.
  5. To support others in maintaining health, safety and security.
  6. To respond to, record and report any adverse events or incidents relating to the intervention or treatment with an appropriate degree of urgency.
  7. To accurately test equipment and identify any deviations from required performance standards, together with their likely causes.
  8. To correctly and safely install and integrate equipment components.
  9. To identify and assess the potential risks involved in work activities and processes for self and others.
  10. 10. To report to the Theatre Manager any reportable incident or accidents involving staff, patients or visitors.
  11. To attend annual statutory training in Fire, Manual Handling, Infection Control and Cardio-pulmonary Resuscitation.
  12. To report any defective or faulty equipment to the Theatre Manager, as appropriate.
  13. To ensure proper care and usage of equipment in the Theatre/Recovery area.

Education:

  1. To assist with and participate in the in-service training programme (including staff orientation induction programme) to enhance patient care.
  2. To maintain and update own professional development.
  3. To supervise qualified and unqualified staff.
  4. To attend annual pre-registration assessment update sessions.
  5. To report on study days/courses attended to other members of theatre staff.
  6. To rotate onto various shifts, as required, for professional update, to ensure statutory and personal development is achieved in line with the Personal Development Plan agreed during the annual appraisal.
  7. To share updated skills with night duty staff (if applicable) to further improve 24-hour continuity of patient care.

Management:

  1. With appropriate training and support, to take charge of a shift without direct supervision.
  2. To participate in integrated governance and risk assessment and reporting, as required.
  3. To participate in the on-call rota for the department.
